Concord Floral is a Canadian play written by Jordan Tannahill. Theatre SKAM produced the show in the summer of 2018, in Victoria B.C.
The venue was a disused Staples store on a main downtown route.
The performance was directed by Kathleen Greenfield as a site-specific “roving” piece where the performers were staged in several locations throughout the space, and the audience was invited to follow the story by walking though the sets.
The design aimed to combine the very present urban elements of the property (large open rooms, escalator, florescent lights, columns, linoleum floors) and subtly introduce elements to make it into a working theatre space, without losing the sterile qualities the space possessed.
We created three environments: The upstairs, where the show opens, was dressed as a gallery with large scale portraits of all the cast members.
The performers then moved into the lower level where we made use of the florescent lights and a set of metal chairs to set the scenes of classrooms, houses and cafeterias.
The final scene brought the audience into the far corner of the basement where we built a partially collapsed greenhouse, full of graffiti, and real plants. In this final scene we allowed colour, and altered reality into the space, as though the Staples building itself was being grown over by plants.
